What does Beaverton’s Mayor do?

The City of Beaverton has a strong Mayor form of government. The Mayor is the executive and administrative head of the government of the City, and presides over the City Council. All powers of the City are vested in the City Council which consists of five councilors. The Mayor and City Councilors are all elected at-large to serve four year terms. Among many other duties, Beaverton’s Mayor and City Council are responsible for planning, improving and maintaining the City's infrastructure (such as our streets, water system, storm and sewer system), providing cost effective and responsive services to the community (including police services, library services, and more), ensuring long term financial stability, adopting budgets and directing City operations, projects and programs (including sustainability, recycling, downtown redevelopment, neighborhood planning, and more).

Judging Criteria
Local judging will be conducted by the Mayor and the City Council. Statewide judging will be conducted by a panel of Mayors. In selecting the winners, the judges will consider:
  • Creativity – Does the student demonstrate curiosity and originality?
  • Clarity / Sincerity of Thought – Is the submission well thought out and organized?
  • Proper Use of Grammar – Does the submission contain proper spelling, grammar and punctuation? (Applies to essay, PowerPoint and video submissions only.)
  • Subject Relevancy – Are the major points relevant to the role of a government leader? Does the student demonstrate an understanding of municipal government and the job of mayor?

Contest Rules
  • All submissions must be accompanied by a completed entry form.  All forms for students under age 18 must be signed by the student’s parent or guardian. Entry forms may be photocopied.
  • Only one submission per student will be accepted.
  • Submissions will not be returned and will become the property of the City of Beaverton/Oregon Mayors Association (OMA).
  • The City of Beaverton and OMA retain the right to publish videos, essays and posters along with the names and likenesses of each student.
  • Prior winners are not allowed to participate.
  • City of Beaverton and League of Oregon Cities (LOC) employees and dependents are not eligible to enter.
  • Beaverton contest participants must attend classes or be home-schooled in the Beaverton area.
  • City of Beaverton contest winners will each receive a $50 VISA gift card (one for each category) to be awarded during the Tuesday, May 5, 2015, City Council meeting.
  • Beaverton winners (one winner in each category) will go on to compete in the statewide OMA competition. Winners in each category for the statewide competition will receive an iPad Air Tablet at the OMA Conference during in Cottage Grove, Oregon on Friday, July 31, 2015.

  • The poster contest is open to students enrolled in elementary school (grades 4-5) or being home-schooled at the same grade level for the 2014-15 school year.
  • Poster size must be a minimum of 17" and maximum of 28" in height or width.
  • Students are encouraged to be creative and may use any art medium (e.g., poster paints, felt pens, colored pencils, pastels, crayons, etc.). The poster may be in color or black and white.
  • The student’s name and the day-time phone number or email address for their parent or guardian must appear on the back of the poster.
  • The essay contest is open to students enrolled in middle school (grades 6-8) or being home-schooled at the same grade level for the 2014-15 school year.
  • Essays must be 500 to 1,000 words in length and typed.
  • The student’s name and the day-time phone number or email address for their parent or guardian must appear at the top of the essay.

Video/PowerPoint Presentation:
  • The video/PowerPoint contest is open to students enrolled in high school (grades 9-12) or being home-schooled at the same level for the 2014-2015 school year.    
  • Presentations must be one to three minutes in length.    
  • Presentations must be submitted on disk.
  • The student’s name and the day-time phone number or email address for their parent of guardian must be written on the disk or disk sleeve.
