Planning Commission

Meeting
  • Membership: There are 7 regular members. City Council may appoint 1 or more alternates in addition to the regular members.

Regular and alternate members must be City residents. The alternate with most seniority shall move into the regular position that is being vacated, and serve out the term of the position being vacated.

You can use our Boards and Commissions Application to apply for an opening.
  • Powers and Duties: The commission's powers and duties are granted by Charter, Code, and City ordinances, State law, and official policies created by City Council. The Commission is the decision making authority for applications which deal with uses of land. The Commission also advises the City Council on Development Code Text Amendment, Zone Change, and Comprehensive Plan Amendment applications.
  • Meetings: Meetings are scheduled for every Wednesday of the year; however, the Commission only meets when there is an item(s) scheduled for hearing. It is necessary to be available to meet every Wednesday to ensure review and decision on applications within State mandated timelines.

Since 2004, the Commission averages approximately 25 meetings a year where the entire Commission is in attendance. All members, including alternates, are expected to attend meetings. All members, including alternates, are expected to be familiar with and understand City Codes and policy documents, and to be active participants in commission deliberations in a public setting.
  • Materials: All members, including alternates, are expected to read all of the materials related to their meetings, many of which can be very long and technical.
  • Time Commitment: All members should be willing to dedicate many hours of preparation and meeting time each week. Meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. and will not exceed 10:30 p.m. unless authorized by the Commission.
