City of Beaverton Diversity Award

Award

The City of Beaverton Human Rights Advisory Commission is accepting nominations for the annual City of Beaverton Diversity Award.

The purpose of this award program is to recognize and celebrate outstanding accomplishments and sustained commitment by an individual, community organization, business organization, and/or non-profit group, in the area of promoting appreciation for diversity, human rights, and cultural understanding in the City of Beaverton and our local community.

This year’s award recipient(s) will be honored with a reception and presentation at a January City Council Meeting. Nominations must be received by noon on the second Friday in November.

The nomination form must be complete to be considered.

Nomination packets may be also be obtained and completed packets mailed or delivered to:  Human Rights Advisory Commission, City of Beaverton, 4755 SW Griffith Dr., PO Box 4755, Beaverton, OR 97076.

Diversity Award Program Guidelines

PURPOSE:   To recognize individuals, community groups, non-profit organizations, and business establishments within the Beaverton Urban Services Boundary that have demonstrated outstanding achievements and sustained commitment to the pursuit of cultural diversity and advocacy of basic civil and human rights in our community.

BACKGROUND:   The Beaverton City Council established the Beaverton Human Rights Advisory Commission in April 1993 to preserve Beaverton as a community valued for its rich diversity. The nine-member Commission established the Diversity Award program in January 2003.

CRITERIA:   Nominations should reflect civil and human rights achievements by a specific person or organization through specific work with other individuals or groups, or through a specific product or activity that has a visible, tangible, or measurable impact on the perception of, attitude toward, respect for, and treatment of other persons. See the Award Criteria section for examples.

Rules & Eligibility

  • Nominations should reflect civil and human rights achievements by an individual or organization through specific work with other individuals or groups, or through a specific product or activity that has a visible, tangible, or measurable impact on the perception of, attitude toward, respect for, and treatment of other persons.
  • Nominated individuals or groups should have been engaged in this work within the last 12 months, with significant activity within the Beaverton Urban Services Boundary.
  • Previous award recipients are eligible for repeat nominations if the work or activity is different than previously awarded.
  • Nominations should be made to the City of Beaverton Human Rights Advisory Commission in writing on the proper nomination form.
  • You may submit as many separate nominations as desired.
  • The nominator is responsible for providing relevant information, e.g., letters of support, newspaper clippings, photographs, etc. with the nomination form. The nominator must sign the nomination form and complete the form where applicable.
  • All nominations and materials become the property of the City of Beaverton Human Rights Advisory Commission and will not be returned.
  • The nominee must live, work, or be located and provide the activity within the Beaverton Urban Services Boundary.
  • The Human Rights Advisory Commission will screen and judge the nominations. The decision of the Commission will be final.
  • Nominations for the City of Beaverton Diversity Award must be submitted prior to 12:00 noon on Friday, November 9, 2007. Late nominations will not be accepted.
  • Submissions should be faxed to 503-526-2572 or mailed to Human Rights Advisory Commission, City of Beaverton, PO Box 4755, Beaverton, OR 97076.

Diversity Award Criteria

Examples Of Criteria To Be Used May Include:

  1. Individual Achievement Award
    To be presented to an individual who has:
    • demonstrated dedication and commitment to advocating and protecting civil and human rights;
    • led the development of contemporary measures to fight discrimination and prejudice and the effects of past discrimination; and/or
    • fostered positive communication and actively promoted inter-group relations among persons of different races, ages, ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientations, religious backgrounds, or physical and mental abilities.
  2. Business And Industry Awards
    To be presented to a business or industry that has:
    • developed and implemented an effective equal opportunity or affirmative action program as demonstrated by a diversified work force in which all persons are afforded opportunities for employment and upward mobility, regardless of race, ethnic origin, gender, religion, age, sexual orientation, disability, or any other prohibited basis of discrimination; and
    • demonstrated corporate responsibility by devoting resources for the improvement of the Beaverton community at large.
  3. Community Groups And Non-Profit Organizations
    To be presented to a community group or non-profit organization that has:
    • demonstrated sustained commitment to the raising of the level of awareness and concern for the values and importance of human rights;
    • advocated the development and improvement of legal mechanisms to protect basic civil and human rights; and/or
    • established programs to educate and inform members of the community of their civil and human rights.

Nomination Submission

Nominations should be made as follows:

  • Nominations should be made to the City of Beaverton Human Rights Advisory Commission in writing on the proper Diversity Award nomination form (PDF).
  • Nominations for the City of Beaverton Diversity Award may be submitted throughout the calendar year, but no later than noon on the second Friday of November.
  • The nominee must live, work, or be located within the Beaverton Urban Services Boundary.
  • Additional relevant information, e.g., letters of support, newspaper clippings, photographs, etc. may be submitted with the Diversity Award nomination form (PDF).
  • Note:  Any materials submitted become the property of the City of Beaverton Human Rights Advisory Commission and cannot be returned. Please photo copy original articles, etc. if you wish to submit them as part of the nomination packet.
  • The Diversity Award nomination form (PDF) must be complete to be considered.
