You must check in at the court clerk’s counter before going into the courtroom. Cases are usually called on a first-come, first-served basis. Please be seated when you enter the courtroom. Turn off all cell phones and audible pagers. If you are wearing a hat please remove it.

If you prefer not to appear in court, you may in some cases have one of the following options:

  1. The court clerk may reduce your fine through a Violations Bureau. The fine is based on your driving record, according to a schedule.
  2. You may be able to post the full amount of bail and write a letter of explanation to the Court. The judge will review your statement and make a decision. If the citation is dismissed or if the fine is reduced, you will receive a refund.
  3. You may enter a Not Guilty plea in writing and have the case set for trial at the court clerk’s counter. Under some circumstances, you may be asked to post bail or your driver’s license as security for the trial date.
  4. If your case has not been reset before, you may request a one-week continuance at the court clerk’s counter. If you are requesting the setover of a trial you must make this request in writing at least one week before the court date. (See the back of your citation for additional information.)

If you do appear in court, this will be the general procedure:

  1. When your name is called in Court, please come forward to the tables. The Judge will explain the charge and ask for your plea. If you are undecided on how to plead, or need time to discuss this matter with an attorney, the Court may grant a setover (usually two weeks).
  2. If you plead guilty, you may give an explanation. The Judge will consider your statement and your driving record in setting a fine. Please obtain a copy of the ticket from the Bailiff and then pay the fine to the cashier at the court clerk’s counter. If you are unable to pay today, you must obtain an extension from the Court. You must sign a form at the court clerk’s counter. An additional $10.00 collection fee will be charged.
  3. If you want to contest the charge, you may enter a Not Guilty plea and the case will be set for trial. The Court will not consider your explanation today. Trials are held on various days and evenings; your case will be heard in approximately 30 days. You may be asked to post bail or an Oregon Driver’s License (ODL) to receive a trial date, under some circumstances.
