Bike Beaverton 2010

Get ready to pedal! The third annual Bike Beaverton community ride is set for Sunday, August 1 at 1 p.m. at City Park (SW 5th Street at Hall Blvd.). More than 240 riders participated in the second family friendly pedal through the streets of Beaverton last summer. This year, Beaverton’s Bicycle Advisory Committee (BAC) is aiming to more than double participation and make the event even bigger and better.

The bike safety rodeo hosted by the Beaverton Police Department (BPD) will begin at 1 p.m. with three different bike rides to choose from starting at 2 p.m. (See the the route map for more details.) There will be an around-the-block route for the little ones, a six-mile family-friendly route, and a thirteen-mile fitness ride. Mayor Denny Doyle will lead the ride, and Northern Alliance Drumline and the musicians of Amish Love Child will once again inspire and entertain participants before and afterward.

The ride will conclude with the annual ice cream social, a well-deserved treat for the finishers sponsored by Rivermark Community Credit Union.

“Bike Beaverton is a great opportunity for riders to become more familiar with bicycle routes and alternate transportation options in Beaverton. Plus, it’s just plain old-fashioned family fun,” said Mayor Denny Doyle.

Helmets and waivers for participants are required. The forms will also be available at the ride.

The event is supported by the City of Beaverton Bicycle Advisory Committee, Northwest Bicycle Safety Council, Rivermark Community Credit Union, the Bike Gallery, Bike-n-Hike, and Irina Moga DDS.

Bike Beaverton ’09

The 2nd Annual Bike Beaverton community ride was a resounding success! More than 230 riders, led by Mayor Doyle, enjoyed the family friendly pedal through the streets of Beaverton. The day started off with the Beaverton Police Department’s safety Bike Rodeo for kids. While riding through an obstacle course, the kids had fun learning maneuvering skills and how to become safe, confident and aware bike riders. Safety mechanics from the Bike Gallery, Washington County Bicycle Transportation Coalition (WashCo BTC), and Frans Pauwels Community Bicycle Center inspected bikes. The folks from the Northwest Bicycle Safety Council fit, inspected, and supplied over 70 free helmets to those in need. Beaverton’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) was on scene to provide first aid, though none was needed, and neighborhood volunteers, many from Vose, Central Beaverton, and Highland NACs, ride marshal and course monitor volunteers, neighborhood cheerleaders, and staff volunteers from Creekside Village Retirement and Hearthstone Assisted Living made the day memorable and fun. Northern Alliance drum line helped send the bikers on their way, and to add to the fun, musical entertainment was provided throughout the event by Lew Jones and Amish Love Child. Trader Joes provided water, and the City provided free ice cream to participants and volunteers.
