On January 12, 2010, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Haiti shortly before 5 p.m. The earthquake centered itself about 10 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The earthquake could be felt strongly in eastern Cuba, more than 200 miles away. It is presumed to be the biggest disaster in 200 years. There is an estimate that 3 million people may have been affected by the quake and that it would take a day or two for a clear picture of the scope of the destruction to emerge.
