About Kennedy Gardens
The Kennedy Community location Garden closed in 2008. This location served as a community garden site for twelve years, as a result of the gracious generosity of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church. Due to the global economic slowdown, however, St. Matthew’s delayed their plans for the property and the garden reopened for the 2009 and 2010 garden seasons.
- The site is available one a year-to-year basis. Depending on the economic conditions this fall, St. Matthew’s will decide if they are able to initiate their development plans and communicate their intentions about the future in fall.
- If you already have a plot at either the Community Center or the Welch-Centennial Garden, we strongly encourage you to keep your current plot assignment. If you move (back) to the Kennedy Garden, you will not have plot registration priority when Kennedy once again closes.
- In this time of economic stress, the City hopes to enable as many as 85 Beaverton area families to grow food; therefore the “one plot per household” rule remains in effect. If plots remain available in mid-June, we will relax the rule to avoid the plots going unused in 2010.
- The Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District (THPRD) was a partner in reopening the Kennedy Garden, and therefore the “Beaverton residency” registration priority will not be required for gardeners at this site. If you live outside of Beaverton’s city limits, you are welcome to register.
The City, St. Matthew’s and Tualatin Hills Parks and Recreation District (THPRD) recognize the investment of time, labor and resources that many of you put into your former plots at the Kennedy Gardens. Although the Church had planned to be excavating the site for their new project by this time, we are pleased to be able to provide Beaverton area residents with the opportunity to use the site to grow food for their families this summer.
