Drinking Water Fluoridation

Drinking fountain

The City fluoridates our drinking water to improve the dental health for consumers of Beaverton’s water.  The fluoridation system was completed, tested, and began service in mid-May 2004.  Since then, the City’s water has been fluoridated at a target level of 0.9 parts per million (ppm).  Sodium fluoride is added to Beaverton’s drinking water after it leaves the JWC Water Treatment Plant and before entering the City for distribution.  The City’s fluoride feed facility employs sensitive instruments to measure and maintain the desired level of fluoride in the drinking water system.  In addition, seven online electronic fluoride analyzers are situated in different locations throughout the City to monitor fluoride levels in the drinking water 24 hours a day.

Fluoridation Monitoring and Operation

The City’s fluoride feed facility is equipped to ensure that the desired level of fluoride is maintained in the drinking water supply. On-line electronic fluoride analyzers installed in different locations around the City will monitor fluoride levels in the drinking water 24-hours a day. Data collected from the fluoride analyzers is displayed and stored on a water system master control computer. The master control computer uses the data to control and adjust the level of fluoride, as programmed by City water maintenance staff. City water maintenance staff are required by the Oregon Department of Human Services to have water treatment certification, which covers fluoridation. The Oregon Department of Human Services also requires regular additional hand-collected drinking water samples to be tested by a state certified laboratory to check calibration of the on-line electronic monitoring analyzers. A wide range of water quality data is reported by the City of Beaverton to the Oregon Department of Human Services. Beaverton’s test results and water system information can be found on the Oregon Department of Human Services Internet web site at:

Fluoridated Water in the Tigard Water District

Though none of Tigard’s wholesale water providers fluoridate their water supplies, water from the Joint Water Commission is piped through the City of Beaverton’s water distribution system. Since Beaverton adds fluoride to the water supply, water delivered via this route does contain fluoride. Only those water customers nearest to the water source entry point, in the vicinity of Barrows Road and Scholls Ferry Road, will receive fluoridated water.

To find out more, please contact the City of Tigard’s Water Quality Program Coordinator, Sally Mills at 503-718-2604 or sally@tigard-or.gov.
