Web Security is High on our Radar

Web site and application security is important to us in protecting our data resources and users’ information. The problems of Web application security are becoming worse with the recent trends towards rich applications. Criminals/hackers are constantly coming up with new ways and tactics to compromise Web applications and to steal sensitive data.

To help in providing secure Web environment, Web Services developed many ongoing processes and systems. In addition to using SSL (Secure Socket Layer) Certificates for encrypting data transmissions and verifying identity of our Web site, McAfee SECURE security system was recently implemented and security upgrades were made to the City of Beaverton public Web sites and e-Government applications. This system tests and certifies our Web sites daily to pass the McAfee SECURE rigorous security scans. To help address concerns about hacker access to confidential data, the “live” McAfee SECURE mark appears on our Web sites only when they meet the high security standard.

Our Web sites certified as McAfee SECURE are tested daily to pass all external vulnerability audit recommendations of the Department of Homeland Security’s National Infrastructure Protection Center (NIPC), the SANS/FBI Top 20 Internet Security Vulnerabilities list as well as the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard vulnerability audit requirements. McAfee SECURE certification is achieved by passing rigorous daily network security audits. Both generic and software specific tests are performed in order to uncover Web application security vulnerabilities.

This advanced and automated security auditing, vulnerability discovery and management technology provides a highly effective security solution and allows the McAfee SECURE mark to appear only when a Web site’s current security status meets the highest published government standards. In order to maintain McAfee SECURE certification, the Web systems must have been audited within the past 72 hours, and all vulnerabilities categorized as urgent, critical, or high severity must have been remediated within 72 hours of their discovery.

The Web Services Program is dedicated to making City Web sites and e-Government applications secure from vulnerabilities and to securing users’ data through their ongoing development efforts.
