Fair Housing
Ensuring Equal Opportunities
All Americans are provided protection under the Fair Housing Act. This law and its amendments means that no person may be denied housing because of their:
  • Color
  • Disability
  • Familial status
  • National origin
  • Race
  • Sex

If a household can otherwise qualify for a housing unit, loan, insurance, or most other housing-related transactions, then the law states that they will have equal access to that transaction and cannot be denied access based on their status as a protected class. The purpose of the law is to ensure equal access to housing of choice.

Extra Protections
The State of Oregon and the City of Beaverton have added extra protections that state that persons cannot be denied housing because of their:
  • Age
  • Gender identity
  • Marital status
  • Occupation
  • Sexual orientation
  • Source of income

Additional Information

To learn more about your rights under the Fair Housing Act, please refer to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) or the Fair Housing Council or Oregon.
