About the Board of Design Review

  • Membership: There are 7 members, consisting of the following: 1 registered architect; 1 registered landscape architect; 2 individuals actively involved in architecture, landscape architecture, design engineering, a construction-related industry, or graphic arts; and 3 individuals qualified to serve by education, interest, training, or experience. Preference is given to City residents.
You can use our Boards and Commissions Application to apply for an opening.
  • Powers and Duties: The board's duties include reviewing development proposals subject to the site and design review process, and making necessary decisions concerning design and aesthetic aspects of proposed developments in accordance with the provisions of the City's Development Code and any other duties assigned to it by City Council.
  • Meetings: Meetings are scheduled for every Thursday of the year; however, the Board only meets when there is an item(s) scheduled for hearing. It is necessary to be available to meet every Thursday to ensure review and decision on applications within State mandated timelines.

Since 2004, the Board averages approximately 20 meetings a year where the entire Board is in attendance. All members are expected to attend scheduled meetings. All members are expected to be familiar with and understand City Codes and policy documents, and to be active participants in board deliberations in a public setting.
  • Materials: All members are expected to read all of the materials related to their meetings, many of which can be very long and technical.
  • Time Commitment: All members should be willing to dedicate many hours of preparation and meeting time for each scheduled meeting. Meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. and will not exceed 10:00 p.m. unless authorized by the Board.
