Beaverton is sponsoring many opportunities for families to be together and enjoy our community this summer. The events are varied and provide you many choices depending on your interests! My column is highlighting some of the choices and more detailed information is available in this issue of Your City.
For the fourth year in a row, the City Council and I will welcome citizens to the 2005 Picnics in the Park series. Held four times over the summer, the picnics give citizens an opportunity to informally meet their Mayor and City Council and also spend time in a quality local park with hundreds of other citizens to enjoy hot dogs, chips, beverages and encourage citizen participation in their neighborhoods. The picnics are friendly, comfortable and give us all the chance to meet others in our neighborhoods and learn more about your City government in an informal setting. I really look forward each summer to meeting people and their families!
A really fun and moving event for veterans, families and kids is the Annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Memorial Park. Co–sponsored by the American Legion, Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District and the City, the event honors those who have died in military service to our country and nicely promotes patriotism. To the credit of our local American Legion Post, the event has grown to significant proportions and includes live band music, a military plane flyover and honors all military veterans.
Returning for its 18th year, the Beaverton Farmers Market will open Saturday, May 7. It is recognized as one of the finest open–air fresh produce, flowers, plants, herbs and international artisan food markets in America. Live music and energetic vendors will greet you each time you attend and it is a worthwhile event to share with your entire family. Situated directly across the street from the Beaverton City Library and adjacent to City Park, you’ll have the opportunity to leisurely enjoy a “city square” atmosphere that bustles with high energy and multiple shopping choices! When the warmer weather returns, children can be entertained in the water fountain adjacent to the Farmers Market.
The popular “Beaverton Last Tuesday @ The Round” returns again this year for special art, food and music entertainment for the entire community. It is held from 5:00–8:00 pm in the public space at The Round development along Westside Light Rail the last Tuesday of each month from May through September. Everyone is welcome and it is a wonderful opportunity for a new experience with your family.
The Beaverton Arts Commission is co–sponsoring the 10th Beaverton Strings Program that finishes with a free grand concert on May 23. This is just one of many arts programs available for children and families this summer. To learn more about available programs and events, please see page 14 of this newsletter for more detailed information.
The Beaverton City Library 2005 Summer Reading Programs offer multiple opportunities for youth and teenagers to enhance their reading skills, win prizes and develop new interests. The Children’s Summer Reading Program and Teen Summer Reading Club are well organized and provide a meaningful way to help your children improve in this most important area of education. Hundreds of children participate and return to the program each summer. The Beaverton Library Foundation has helped provide the generous support for the Summer Reading Programs.
Finally, the popular Flicks by the Fountain returns for the second year this summer! Held in the park across from the Beaverton City Library, prior–released films are shown on a portable screen at twilight. Hundreds have gathered to sit on the grass, enjoy a family picnic and watch a movie in the comfort of the cooling evening air. It is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy time with family and neighbors.
