Summer’s On Its Way!

I must admit that this past winter seemed like it was at least six months long! Well, summer can’t be too far away and there are many City-supported events that provide an opportunity to do something fun locally with your family that shouldn’t cost you a single dime to participate!

The Beaverton Farmers Market opened May 12 for its 20th season! As a City Councilor 20 years ago, I supported giving the Farmers Market initial seed-money the first two years to help give them a boost to begin. It was a meager investment that has given back to our community many times over. Admittedly, I wasn’t certain it would succeed. What I missed seeing initially was that people do enjoy the opportunity to mix in an informal and relaxed setting while getting a chance to hand-pick fruits, vegetables and plants from many of the vendors who actually grow the products. Children are welcome and the Market promises to have special events during this anniversary year. The Market has live music from folk to jazz, dance, special floral displays, pie-baking contests, the annual Artists Against Hunger charity benefit and special food demonstrations. It will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. every Saturday through October. In addition, from June 27 through September the Market will be open each Wednesday 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The Market is located in the parking lot directly across from the City Library at 5th and Hall Blvd. To learn more, visit their Web site at www.beavertonfarmersmarket.com.

Beaverton’s Annual Memorial Day Ceremony will be held on Monday, May 28th promptly at 11:00 a.m. in Memorial Park (corners of 7th to 9th & Watson Streets in downtown Beaverton). The event honors veterans past, present and future, and is coordinated by the Beaverton American Legion Post #124. This is also a true celebration of patriotism and includes patriotic music provided by our own Beaverton Community Band. The Oregon Air National Guard 142nd Fighter Wing will provide a flyover of two F-15 fighter planes. This is an action-packed patriotic event where you can hear some meaningful speeches, join hundreds of other citizens in recognizing our veterans and visit a special park that has been improved by our proud area veterans. It lasts only an hour, but is well worth your time!

Our annual Picnics in the Park will be sponsored by the City again this summer. This is our 5th year of the picnics. The City Councilors and I look forward to meeting you in this more informal setting. You can bring your family and enjoy the friendly community atmosphere in a local park. We will supply the hot dogs and drinks. This is a great opportunity to visit with your neighbors and also make new friends. The kids will have a chance to meet some of our Beaverton Police Officers and usually fire personnel from the Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue are in attendance (unless of course they need to respond to an emergency call for service). Many of the City’s programs will have tables set-up to provide information on City services. The four Picnics in the Park this summer are June 28th (Autumn Ridge Park), July 12 (City Park), July 19 (Hiteon Park) and July 26 (Ridgecrest Park). We thank the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District for providing the picnic locations and grooming the facilities in advance! More information is available on the City’s website at www.beavertonoregon.gov.

Please join us this summer for some fun family events!
