What do you think Beaverton will look like in the future? We are already one of Oregon’s largest cities and continue to grow. Our downtown core is changing and beginning to take on a new, more positive shape. It is becoming a more accessible urban hub with the recent development of Westside Light Rail and next year the opening of Commuter Rail. We have a healthy overall business community now and will we continue to be a center for high tech and other specialized employment? How do we want to change as a community and what values do we desire to embrace? What other questions should we ask and ultimately answer? You can be part of that discussion and shape our City’s future by joining the upcoming Visioning process sponsored by the City of Beaverton.
I’m excited to announce the Visioning process that begins in November and continues into early next year. Our Visioning will kick-off with five Town Hall Workshops on November 1, 2 and 3 during the day and evening. Times are posted on the back of this issue of Your City. While each session will have a focus for a particular group, everyone is invited to each session so that you’ll have opportunities to share your thoughts and ideas at your convenience. Each of the five Visioning Town Hall Workshops will be held at our City Library (5th & Hall Blvd.) in downtown Beaverton. In addition, other Community Outreach meetings will be held throughout the City later in November into early December. Those dates and locations will be available soon and posted on our City Web site. The Web site address is www.beavertonoregon.gov or you can call (503) 526-2437 to obtain more information.
On November 1st, the morning session will focus on Seniors and the evening session invites Community Leaders. On November 2nd, the morning slot will feature the Business Community and the late afternoon session will focus on Youth. The Saturday afternoon session invites all citizens. The later Community Outreach meetings will include sessions in various parts of the City so that people will have an opportunity to participate closer to home. In January, we will conduct further public outreach meetings by presenting those ideas that were heard in November and December to be certain that we have accurately captured what you have shared.
It is sometimes difficult to convey interest and sincere feelings in written form rather than in person. However, I want you to know I’m really pleased to be holding our Visioning process and sincerely look forward to meeting many citizens and hearing what you have to say about the future of our City. I’m passionate about Beaverton and have really valued serving you. While I’ve had contact with thousands of citizens over my years of public service, I am always interested in hearing new ideas about what you think and have to say about our community. I think you’ll find the actual process at each meeting on November 1, 2 and 3 very interesting. They will all be conducted in the same manner. The hired outside facilitator will conduct the overall meetings and extensive notes of citizen comments will be taken and retained for the summary document that leads to the City Council adoption of your Visioning for our City’s future. In addition, we have retained a highly skilled illustrator who listens to the conversations and makes a “picture history” of the ideas shared for people to view at the time and later to be retained as a “living document” from the process.
Please join us in helping shape Beaverton’s future!!
