Summer is a great time in Beaverton! Beginning with the 21st opening of the Beaverton Farmers Market in May, many fun opportunities await Beaverton residents. The City offers many ways to enjoy spending time as a family very close to home.
The Beaverton Farmers Market is recognized statewide as the premier location for locally grown flowers, fruits, vegetables and food. Live music, dance, floral displays, pie-baking contests and special food demonstrations are among the multitude of offerings available throughout the season. The Market has a great “buzz” to it each Saturday—you can meet friends, family and make contact with the growers and producers who sell their local products.
The City is proud to partner with these local farmers and vendors by providing the venue directly across the street from the City Library, adjacent to our beautiful City Park and fountain. The Farmers Market is open from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each Saturday through October.
Don’t miss Beaverton Last Tuesday events at The Round this summer! This annual summer celebration of music, art and good food is a wonderful family event that has no admission charge. Held once again at The Round fountain plaza adjacent to the Beaverton Central Light Rail station, Last Tuesdays take place from 5 to 8 p.m. on June 24, July 29 and August 26.
Indoor and outdoor dining is available at The Round restaurants and visual art displays will be available throughout the Plaza. On June 24, the Swingline Cubs will play swing-era music, on July 29, Michael Allen Harrison and his musical trio present classical contemporary music and on August 26, The Bobby Torres Ensemble brings Latin and jazz sounds to the Round.
In July, our four annual Picnics in the Park will be held throughout the City. This is our sixth year to host the Picnics. The City Council and I look forward to meeting and greeting you! Bring your family and enjoy a friendly community atmosphere in a local park. Meet your neighbors and also make new friends. Members of our Beaverton Police Department and the Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue join this fun family event. Information about other City services will also be available. We supply the hot dogs and drinks! The Picnics will be held at Schiffler Park on July 10, Camille Park on July 17, Hiteon Park on July 24 and Autumn Ridge Park on July 30. Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District partners with the City by assisting in preparing the parks and providing seating for the picnics.
In August, our popular Flicks by the Fountain will return to City Park directly across the street from the Beaverton City Library. The films are shown on a large blow-up screen in front of the fountain, which provides enough room for families to enjoy a picnic dinner on the grass in advance of the starting time. The Flicks will be held Friday evenings on August 1, 8, 15 and 22 beginning at dusk.
More information about these and other community events is available on the City Web site at www.BeavertonOregon.gov. I also hope you enjoy the beautiful hanging flower baskets which were installed on our downtown light posts in late May. After a long, cold and wet winter we have earned a fun summer!
