The pacific madrone is the only native broadleaf evergreen tree to this region. Mainly found at the coast and in some moist wooded settings they are known to thrive on sloped rocky soils. Many Pacific Madrones have a crooked growing habit with an unusual canopy growth. The leaves are smooth and opposite growing with a glossy dark green color. The Bark is a reddish- brown color that sheds the outer later in papery flakes. Yellow upright flowers emerge in late spring in a cluster pattern.
