BEAVERTON, Ore. – April is National Poetry Month, celebrate by writing poetry! This year, Beaverton City Library and the Beaverton Library Foundation challenge teens in grades 6-12 to write a haiku—a three-line poem with seventeen syllables, written in a 5/7/5 syllable count (for more information and examples, visit http://bit.ly/2gLf0CU).
Cash prizes will be awarded to three winners in middle school and high school. Contest guidelines and an entry form will be posted on the Teens page of the library website at www.BeavertonLibrary.org/Teens beginning Saturday, Mar. 24.
Entries can be submitted in the Teen Room at the main library located at 12375 SW 5th St or at the Murray Scholls branch located at 11200 SW Murray Scholls Place, and are due on Saturday, Apr. 21.
Winners will be announced at the Teen Poetry Coffee House on Friday, May 4 beginning at 4:30 p.m. Parents, teachers and family members are welcome to stay for the announcement from 4:30 to 4:45 p.m.; only teens in grades 6-12 may be present for coffee house snacks and poetry from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. Winning entries will be posted on the Teens page of the library website on Saturday, May 5.
