BEAVERTON, Ore. – In honor of National Poetry Month, join Beaverton City Library (12375 SW 5th St) on Saturday, April 13 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. to share some poetry! Read your own poetry or a favorite poem by someone else at our first-ever Poetry Open Mic in the main library auditorium.
The Poetry Open Mic is a friendly poetry forum for ages 13 and up. Participants should arrive 15 minutes prior to the event start to sign-in to be called to the stage. A random participant will receive a $10 Book Corner gift certificate. Participation is not required; the event is open to all who simply want to enjoy the show.
Opening the show, we are pleased to welcome Susan Swartwout, award-winning poet, author, and professor emerita of English-Writing at Southeast Missouri State University.
Dr. Swartwout is the author of the poetry book Odd Beauty, Strange Fruit and poetry chapbooks Freaks and Uncommon Ground, editor of Proud to Be: Writing by American Warriors, volumes 1 through 5, and co-editor of Hurricane Blues: Poems About Katrina and Rita, Real Things: An Anthology of Popular Culture in American Poetry, and A Student’s Guide to Publishing. Among her writing awards are St. Louis Poetry Center's Stanley Hanks Award, the Rona Jaffe Foundation Award, the Davenport Award for Fiction, a Ragdale Foundation Fellowship, and a Hedgebrook Writers residency.
More than 100 of Dr. Swartwout’s poems, stories and essays have been published in national anthologies, collections and literary magazines. In addition to teaching creative writing and editing, she worked in the publishing industry for 27 years as an editor and copyeditor for various presses, and for 16 years as a university-press publisher.
